The level 4 team consist of 5 boys
Trainings are only 3hrs long...ideally this should be longer, but unfortunatelly we have not been able to lengthen out trainings.

WARM-UP:
5 min jump rope with the weight belts - focus is on the straight legs, the hgh rebound

PHYSICAL PREPARATION BASICS - 20mn
The level 4's will be moving up to level 5 and have to get used to a similar training structure as the older boys.
CIRCUIT # 1 (3sets x 15sec ea)
Tuck front lever
Single leg or full back levers
V-Hang (we do this for the kip for level 5, as preparation)

CIRCUIT # 2
We do 3 sets of 10
Chin-ups (between PB, chins above the PB)
Leg lifts
Push-ups on rings (feet elevated)(or PP)

Press to handstand x 20 each (3 boys can straddle press to HS on PB by themselves, 2 can't yet)
If they can straddle press they need to do at least 10 from straddle hold, and then in pike on floor. I go and spot each one for 5 on the PB pike press, straddle down, straddle press. in that order.

FIRST APPARATUS: Parallel Bars
Because the level 4 routines are SO simple (and yet even though they can a do all the skill but need to just get it all together) we do stations.
I work with 1 boy at a time on routines will the others do stations. The boys were really sore and tired, it was unusually so. Nothing from the previous training suggests that the volume or intensity was to high? One of the Level 6's has an injured foor, because he hit the bar on the flyaway after the kick out...he saddly pulled into the bar . However this prevented him from vaulting something he needs to work on.
I offically hATE coaching floor, mainly because the floor is next to the stero which management wants to be always blasting (so i can't hear and i have to yell all the time). THe guys clearly lacked the endurance from not having done routines for a few weeks. Its good that we are getting back into it now, plenty of time to get back into shape for it before the meet. Basics on floor will need to be a BIG priority during the summer training..

I felt myself going back into the recent default mode or internalizing all failures and getting mad about it, was able to do a decent job at refraining for let my frustration get the best of me, but clearly i have let myself get into a bad habbit with this. Definitely environment has lots to do with it. Other coaching staff are very loud often for poor reasons, however the actual environment is not super and i think i have saddly soked up some of that. Must work on this.

Basic strength went well, maybe it was to slow...need to let it run for a little bit, and see how it goes.
Handstans core work was good, they were able to get through it (volume reduced to only 2 set for everything due to time lost in explaining) pretty well with partners. Clearly they need to work on their spotting skills, but that will come around. They could not do the RLL with ankle weights (so we took them off..well not well anyways). Even though there was no remianing time we we did so some HS work...seeing improvement today lets see if it will continue

PB went ok..nothing great, actually lots to complain and be unsatisfied with but not the point, need to keep focused on what i can do to help them improve. Routines just need consistency, so we need to keep working on routines and take a little back burner on working on new skills. Even though its so tempting.
Need to keep stations while they way very skill specific to their routines.

Things that i notice that need to be included into the program are V-ups, leg lifts etc.. and more advanced variations. Need to improve the speed of piking.

By the time we got to RINGS individuals fatigue was showing with everyone performing quite poorly. It may be a bad idea to introduce conditioning during rings.. Should just do it at the end! of rings. Time ran out, so Rings was not very productive unfortunatelly. Need get them working on Upper arms swings more during rings to help improve the turnover of Rings swings.. next time.

Vol 5, 2011 - Kinematic Analysis of the Centre of Mass in the Back Handspring: A case study.

ABSTACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze the back handspring from a round off in gymnastics via kinematics. A secondary purpose was to explore the use of an optoelectronic system in studying the nature of this skill. Five female gymnasts, with differing levels of expertise volunteered as subjects. An optoelectronic system (Vicon Motion 460) was employed (100Hz). A 41 point three-dimensional model was used to characterize the body, and descriptive analyses were performed. The results demonstrated that the most accomplished gymnast achieved a greater take off horizontal velocity into the back handspring (3.4 m.s-1) and from the hands support phase (2.2 m.s-1). The most advanced gymnast showed a higher take off vertical velocity from hands support (1.0 m.s-1) and higher flight trajectory from her hands (0.06 m). The less skilled gymnasts all demonstrated a serious flaw by showing a marked descent during the flight phase from the hands. They showed inappropriately long first flight phases (0.67 and 0.75 m), sacrificing distance during the second flight. The more expert gymnast demonstrated fewer general technical errors. This study demonstrated that infra red optoelectronics optoelectronic systems are helpful in reporting detailed kinematics performance deficiencies and determining the biomechanical feedback for superior performances

Key Words: Acrobatics, Flic flac, Tumbling, Skill learning, Biomechanics

New Article - Qualitative description of the ideal Yurchenko layout vault technique

New article has been added to Vol 4. 2001 issue of Gym Coach Journal.

Qualitative description of the ideal Yurchenko layout vault technique

ABSTRACT
The Yurchenko vault was first pioneers in 1982 by Natialie Yurchenko and has since become the most widely used vault entry for women as well being performed by men. The aim of this paper is to examine the available literature and provide a detailed description of the key biomechanics characteristics and their interrelationship in the possibly ideal technique for a Yurchenko layout vault. Current scientific literature has identified several biomechanical characteristic that are shared among outstanding performances: a) a quick and close to vertical take-off from the springboard following the round-off, b) very fast rotation backward onto the table, with a high angle of attack between 30-40° c) a very short table support phase with an increasing vertical velocity on take-off with minimal losses in horizontal velocity, with the best predictive variable to a successful vault being angular momentum on departure from the springboard. Coaches who wish to improve their gymnast’s performance can compare their gymnast’s technique to the available data and devise training protocols to address their gymnast’s short comings based on comparisons with the proposed ideal kinematics. Coaches should also concentrate on developing the gymnast’s ability to generate and maintain angular momentum throughout the Round-off, pre-flight phase and table impact as these are the most technically challenging phases of the vault and also associated with as successful execution of this vault.

BUY NOW $5.00 - CLICK HERE

A step toward progress

A step in the direction of progress...The Gym Press will now be included in the EBSCO Publishing Database (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBSCO_Publishing). This is another really good coach education video. However when it was produced it was sadly not produced for English speakers, and so it lacks much of the translations. The consequences of which severely disadvantaged those gymnasts who do not have a naturally fast run. The lack of attention paid to this phase in vaulting is reflected in available gymnastics specific literature, coaching clinics and workshops on vault training. The scope of this article is to present a 12 week off-season sprint training program, for preadolescent gymnasts (7-12 years of age), who have not had formal sprint training. A detailed discussion is presented on the theoretical and practical application of the key concepts to effective sprinting for vault: optimized running mechanics, start of run-up and acceleration. The methodology behind this program is based on current track and field coaching methods, scientific literature on sprinting biomechanics and preadolescence speed and strength training principles. Improving the run-up speed of young gymnast is often the single best way to improving their vault in the begining, thus the time spent in developing the gymnast sprinting ability is time well invested. A well designed and effective sprint training program has benefits not only for improving the vaulting potential of a gymnast, but also servers as a great lower body strength, power, coordination, agility, and plyometric training program for preadolescent gymnast, without many of the potential risks of injury often attributed too more intense plyometric programs.

You can check out videos related to the article from The Gym Press YouTube channel

Library: New articles added to archives

Recently added articles references to The Gym Press Library : Article Archives for October 2009

- COACHING – Sport Psychology
Effects of a season-long PST program on gymnastic performance and on psychological skill development
Fournier JF.
It has taken me months but its finally 90% complete. The new and hopefully improved The Gym Press website. The purpose behind this new website was to:

Improve the search ability of the website. As you will notice you can now search through the website. This will take a couple of days to completely configure but it should be 100% complete in a week or so. This will complete the website update.

Improve the appearance of the website, which lets be honest was desperately needed.

Add new functions – These are still to come, but i plan to start working on the The Gym Press Library projects soon (view page for details of planned projects) – The first project try and raise funds to purchase reprint permissions for popular articles. help and chip-in

Improve the Gym Press Library catalogue, so readers can find references easier (which will also improve as the search engines are completed..thanks to Google.)

The article submission guidelines have been updated and modified to encourage all coaches to contribute. Hopefully this will make things easier. Please give feedback on way to improve these, or that will help encourage contributors.

The Gym Press on Facebook - To improve the ability for coaches to Network through the addition of a Facebook page. Join The Gym Press Facebook and get involved.

Removed The Gym Press forum. There are enough really good gymnastics forums out there, there was no need for any more.

I would like to think that this new website will be more effective and functional. I do apologies that i have been relatively inactive with posting new material, but this project has taken a lot of effort and time to complete, which means that now i can focus on i writing more, and updating the website with new material.

Please spread the word about The Gym Press in your gym, and encourage coaches to contribute.

Latest Article - Does Kre-Alkalyn® have benefits in the training of gymnastics strength skills?

Does Kre-Alkalyn® have benefits in the training of gymnastics strength skills?
Valentin Uzunov
Gym Coach, Vol 3, 2009

ABSTRACT

Dietary supplements have become common ergogenic aids used by athletes from a variety of sports and levels to enhance their performance. Unfortunately more often than not, claimed ergogenic benefits are not backed by clinical studies but rather by smart marketing, misleading information, exaggerations, or anecdotal reports. The aim of this case report is to examine the potential ergogenic benefits of Kre-Alkalyn® in the training of the iron cross and planche. This case report is based on the results of a 25yr old male with 7yrs adult gymnastics training. The subject ran though a 4 week training program which incorporated iron cross and planche specific exercises 2—3 times a week, while supplementing with Kre-Alkalyn®. At the end of the 4 weeks the subject had a 4.4% (7°) improvement in iron cross performance , and 1.37% (2°) in his planche. These were significant performance gains after only 4 weeks. The most noticeable effects reported were the improved recovery rate from trainings and ability to maintain intensity during training sessions. Based on the results from the study and research there is some evidence to suggested that Kre-Alkalyn® supplementation can be a useful ergogenic aid in the training of gymnastics strength skills for both novice and elite level athletes who undergo extensive intensive training. However, consumers should carefully consider the manufacturer’s claims that Kre-Alkalyn® is more effective than creatine monohydrate in light of the fact that such claims are not substantiated by independent research.

Purchase Article --> Click Here ($2.00 USD)

Site Update: Library Complete

The Gym Press Library is finally complete, but i will continuously keep adding more and more relevant updates. However more importantly i have been working on researching 2 new articles that i plan to publish this year at some point. One is on training the clearhip to handstand, and the other is on sprint training for vault.
The reason why these articles are going to take a while is because i am actually doing them as a case study and using my gymnasts as subjects.
The sprint training program start this week, and i will run for 14 weeks at which point i will be able to write up the article.
The clearhip to HS is purely dependent on how quickly the gymnast learn the skill.
These i have a feeling will be some very interesting articles so keep tuned.

In the mean time i encourage everyone to think about contributing to the Gym Coach journal and share your knowledge with others.

Thank You

Library Catalogue Updated: Exercises and Physiology

I have updated the library catalogue and added the conditioning and flexibility reference section.

Hope you find the information useful.
Also as i mentioned last update, this is only a tiny portion of the available literature out there. Of course its not complete by any means but it is a start. At the moment only the Reference Catalogue is ready, with only the biomechanics section filled in. However i hope to work on the other sections as soon as possible.
Sections to be added in the future (hopefully soon) to the Library are:
1- Video catalogue - This will be a reference library for videos that are available on the internet.
2- Video trading post - Where i plan on making a forum for the selling and or trading of gymnastics coaching videos of clinics, workshops, camps etc.. that i and readers have attended. I hope that this way coaches who have videos of such resources will place ads to sell or trade them for other videos, this way creating a greater video resource
3- Classifieds - To post jobs from all over the work for coaches.
4- Book store - I have played around with it, but it will most likely be a combination between Amazon store and a combination of individual ads. I hope this way readers will be able to comment and review on what they think of current books on gymnastics and physical conditioning.

Along with this i promise to continue adding articles to the Gym Coach Journal. I am trying to gain the interest of some amazing authors who will hopefully find the time to write for the journal.

Please leave a comment on what you think about the Library and how it can be made better.

Archieve complete

Hi Everyone

Finally the Gym Coach journal archive is complete. The are many drills and methodologies to coaching this skill. One common characteristic by all methods however is the great emphasis needed on conditioning and developing of the correct body positions. This is a labor intensive task by the coach and very physical demanding on the gymnast. This article presents just one method to developing the free hip to handstand on uneven and high bar.

11.12.08 - New article added to journal archive ' The Handstand: a four stage training model'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress August 2008 Issue.
Article by Valentin Uzunov

Abstract
The handstand is considered as one of the most important fundamental skills in gymnastic, however currently available gymnastics textbooks and scientific literature fails to provide a systematic and practical approach to training this skill to a beginner with an advanced and progressional focus. The aim of this article is to provide coaches with a progressional model to teaching the handstand to beginner gymnast based on theoretical and contemporary skill training methods available in scientific and textbook literature. This was achieved through an examination of relevant research studies available through Medline, modern gymnastic textbooks/coaching manuals, and the author’s personal knowledge and experience. The model presented suggests 4 stages of development/progression of the handstand, with a unique approach to refining the gymnast’s proprioceptive and kinesthetic awareness for maintaining balance. It is also hypothesized that through improved proprioceptive and kinesthetic awareness the gymnast will be able to master dynamic handstand control much more effectively allowing for the improved learning of advanced gymnastics elements.

03.12.08 - New article added to journal archive ' Coaching to the learning styles'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress August 2008 Issue.
Article by Beth Gardner

Abstract
It is widely accepted that individuals learn at different rates and through different learning styles. Each individual has a preference towards a preferred style/s that allows them to extract the most amount of information from their surroundings. Through a greater understanding of the different styles of learning, coaches are able to more effectively present their classes, and thus improve the athlete’s rate of learning. Creating lesson plans for groups or individuals, the use of coaching cues, which address the various learning styles, make classes most effective. This article will discuss the various learning styles and how to effectively use them to create more effective gymnastics classes, recreational and or competitive.

02.12.08 - New article added to journal archive 'A Look at the Pathophysiology and Rehabilitation of Osgood-Schlatter Syndrome'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress August 2008 Issue.
Article by Valentin Uzunov.

This article is an abbreviated version of original manuscript by
Valentin Uzunov (2007). This condition tends to effect young athletes participating in sports that involve a lot of running and jumping, such as, soccer, track and field, dance and gymnastics. It tends to manifests itself in boys between 10-15yrs and 8-13yr girls, usually a time of peak height velocity. The common signs and symptoms are local pain, swelling and tenderness over the tibial tuberosity on the dominant leg, which makes participation in sport painful. The condition is self-limiting without complication if sporting activity is stopped and conservative treatment sought. However this presents serious limitations for serious athletes who must continue to training. This article aims to educate coaches on the aetiology, diagnosis, and treatment options of the condition, as well as well discuss the injury prevention and rehabilitation recommendations. It is believed that an appropriate understanding of this condition by coaches is important in order to be able to effectively implement preventative measures in their training programs, make appropriate recommendations to athletes, and work closely and effectively with health allies (like physiotherapists, GP, pediatricians) and parentsto be able to reduce losses in training time due to OSS.

Wildrose Invitational, do you have what it takes?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 62px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_04SsgOjYuDc/STJiIvJfQQI/AAAAAAAAAP8/GlTn6ggwaB4/s400/wild+rose.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274386015839011074" />

1996-
The inaugural Wild Rose is held in Edmonton in April 1996. Article has been revised to be more accurate, with better illustrations

Abstract
The front tuck somersault is a fundamental skill taught early on in a gymnast’s career. Mistakes in the teaching process will have long lasting consequences as engrained errors will be hard to fix, and will also lead to poor skill transfer. The common approach to teaching the somersault is usually through a trial and error approach, with little time spent on shaping or working the intricate details to the skill. In this article the understand – teach model is used to analyze the front tuck somersault. From this analysis a series of drills are used for teaching the somersault with focus on the critical phases. The critical phases for the front somersault, like any somersault, are the approach, take-off, rotation, and landing. Its is believed that its advantageous to teach each phase separately, so that the gymnast can gain appreciation for the importance of each phase, and understand the correct sequence of events. Once all phases are understood and learned they are combined to train the front somersault. The focus is on transferring a front somersault from a rebound surface to the floor. Careful and progressive progression is ideal, in order for the gymnast to be able to transfer the correct technique from one apparatus to the other.

Archive articles available for download

I just came to my attention that the files in the archive were not available for download because of security restrictions. The Ringelmann Effect helps describes the inverse relationship between the size of a team and individual member contribution to the completion of the task. The more people in a group the more likely that the individual members will not contribute 100% of their maximal effort. Instead it seems that the more members in the group the lower the contribution form individuals members will tend to contribute. This phenomenon has clear implications in team situation, where each member is expected to perform at their best, such as in team sports. However the Ringelmann Effect can also be applied to group dynamics during gymnastics trainings. Coaches need to understand the implications of this social effect, and develop strategies to counteract any negative effects. By creating cohesion, and support within a training group the group will be able to work together more efficiently, and productively. Poor group dynamics in trainings result in poor performance, lack of motivation, slower learning rates. Effective group dynamic understanding can help to prevent or reduce the effects from such negative training factors. This article reviews our current understanding of the Ringelmann effect.

19.11.08 - New article added to archive 'Men’s choreography – it is about postural alignment'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress March 2008 Issue.
Article by Nick Blanton.

Abstract
The artistic and physical preparation requirements of male and female gymnasts are relatively similar, even though they share so many common traits, there are areas where each code has specific needs. Male gymnasts like female gymnast benefit greatly from dance, or ballet training. The effects of such training of the postural alignment are undeniable. However the requirements and demands of male gymnast’s differs substantially from that of female gymnasts. MAG specific choreographed routines help to develop the postural control (especially in the shoulders and pelvis) and grooming (tension, leg shape, arm shape, presentation) that is required in the performance of gymnastics. Proper postural alignment is also fundamental to the learning and performing of gymnastics skills. Basic arm and body positions need to be learned and understood in order for the gymnast to execute postural corrections during skill performance. The following article outlines basic guidelines and suggestions for the development of choreographed sequences specific to MAG with emphasis on arm and body positions.

19.11.08 - New article added to archive 'Stretching Scientifically Part II: Stretching methods, the pros and cons to each method'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress March 2008 Issue.
Article by Valentin Uzunov.

Abstract
Flexibility training in sport is recognized as a major fitness component for the improvement in performance and in the prevention of injury. There are 3 components to flexibility: passive, dynamic and active. Passive flexibility facilitates the development of the other two, however each method needs to be trained and developed separately. In gymnastics this should be periodized over the long term development of the athlete. In the early developmental stages of the athlete passive flexibility should be the dominant form of training. As the gymnast advances and the passive flexibility is developed, dynamic training should beginning to take focus. This is usually in line with the introduction of advanced leaps and jumps in WAG and the training of flairs and certain high bar skill in MAG. Once passive and dynamic flexibility has been developed, active flexibility can realistically be achieved, and should become the focused of the flexibility program. There are many stretching methods to develop each flexibility component, but the PNF CRAC method is the one most often cited as being the most effective method for developing ROM in a join. The advantage of the CRAC method is that it develops active flexility, passive flexibility, and strengthens the muscles and thus aiding with dynamic as well. The trade off is that the method cannot be applied to large groups especially at young ages. In this article the most common stretching methods used in sports training are discussed and analyzed against the physiological adaptations covered in part I of this series (published in Vol1 of Gym Coach, December 20007).

15.11.08 - New article added 'Using the “Understand → Teach” model to coach a double layout dismount of the asymmetrical bars'

This article was originally published in TheGymPress March 2008 Issue.
Article by Rick McCharles and edited by Valentin Uzunov.

Abstract
The ‘understand → teach’ model was presented in Vol.1 (2007) of the Gym Coach. The model was used by several expert coaches from Canada to teach the double layout of the asymmetric bars. These coaches concluded that the ‘understand → teach’ model was to complex and lead to ‘analysis to paralysis’ as well as not accurately reflecting their actual coaching style. Most coaches will recognize the necessity and benefits of a flexibility program and many will even have a fair understanding of the methods they may use, but very few will actually understand how their program works, or its short comings. This two part article will examine the physiological and neurological adaptation that occur with flexibility training, and explore the pros and cons to the common stretching methods used in sports today. Short term gains from stretching are predominantly the result of mechanical adaptations of the muscle and connective tissue. Long term changes are still not clearly understood, but 2 possible alternatives have been proposed: myofibrillogenesis which is the addition of sacromeres to the muscle fibers, and neural inhibition which is the suppression or refined control of the stretch reflex. A better understanding of the physiology behind flexibility training can greatly improve the coaches understanding of what works and what doesn’t. This will allow coaches to design more effective flexibility programs and a reduced risk of injury from engaging in regular intensive flexibility training.

09.11.08 - New article added "Understand - Teach" model, part 1

This article was originally published in TheGymPress December 2007 Issue.
Article by Rick McCharles. Edited and formated by Valentin Uzunov.

Abstract
Coaching any sport to a high level is a complex task that requires many years of practice and study to master. Expert coaches like expert chess players develop strategies through hours of practical experience that allows them to foresee the necessary steps or moves they need to make to avoid problems and achieve the desired outcome. Each coach develops his own methods and strategies of coaching that work for them. The ‘understand teach’ model is but one method that can be used by coaches to analyze and construct a coaching methodology to coach any particular skill. The model assumes that the coach has a holistic understanding of the coaching job, and is able to apply that approach to the way he coaches skills. The model was tested by a group of Canadian coaches who found it too complex which lead them to over analysis. However the model has applications in course presenting, skill analysis, research, and also can be used as an coaching strategy. The better the coach understands the material he has to teach the more effective he is a teaching/coaching his athletes. Effective coaching is about always searching for better ways to do things, and this model presents one way.

30.01.08 - RSS feed added to the The Gym Press

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 38px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_04SsgOjYuDc/SQkVOr6pl_I/AAAAAAAAAPs/DcWZWRqNuQM/s400/Untitled.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262760981610207218" />

You can now subscribe to the RSS feed to The Gym Press Notice Board, where all new additions to the the site will be announced. It’s considered a fundamental prerequisite for the training of all front entry vaults (handsprings, Tsukahara, Kasamatsu). The training and development of this vault starts from an early age with the gymnast performing basic progressions and lead-ups for their first 3-4 years of gymnastics training before competing the actual vault. However, even after all time devoted to training this one skill, many gymnasts still struggle to perform this vault correctly in their first year of competing it. The method presented in this article identifies and corrects common coaching errors and misconceptions about the technical execution of this vault. The method focuses on the first 4 vault phases, and aims to develop run-up consistency and speed, hurdle/springboard mechanics, and quick turnover of preflight. The repulsion or block phase is not the predominant focus, as it success is predominantly the result of the preceding 3 phases, which are identified in literature and research as the most critical areas of focus, for the gymnast to perform exceptional front handspring vaults.
